Three steps. Nothing to learn.
Open Dictation from the launcher with ⌃⌥Space, or from the menu bar.
- 1
Hold the key
Click where you want to type, in any app, and hold fn. A small pill appears under the menu bar and shows your words as you say them.
- 2
Speak naturally
Talk the way you would to a person. Punctuation is added for you. Tap the key once instead of holding it to keep listening hands-free.
- 3
Let go
What you said is typed where your cursor is, and whatever was on your clipboard is put back. Press Esc at any point to cancel.
Everything you’d want. Nothing you wouldn’t.
Works in every app
Email, chat, documents, notes, forms in the browser, the code editor. If you can type there, you can dictate there.
Private and offline
Speech is recognized by Apple’s on-device model. Nothing is uploaded, and after a one-time language download it works without a connection.
Cleaned up for you
Turn on Clean Up and Apple Intelligence takes out the ums, false starts and repeats, and keeps only what you meant when you change your mind mid-sentence.
Your words, spelled right
Add names and terms to the vocabulary so they’re recognized, and set replacements that turn what’s heard into exactly what you want typed.
Hold, or go hands-free
Hold the key for a quick sentence, or tap it once to keep talking without holding anything. Choose fn, Right Option or Right Command.
History you can search
Everything you dictate is kept on your Mac, so you can find it again and copy it with one click, along with your words per minute.
Yes. Tap the key once instead of holding it and Dictation keeps listening until you tap it again, so you can talk as long as you like. Press Esc to cancel at any point.
No. Your speech is turned into text by Apple’s on-device model, and Clean Up uses Apple Intelligence on your Mac. The only download is the language itself, from Apple, the first time you use it.
You hold one key and let go, in any app, with a live preview of your words. You can also have it tidied up as you go, teach it your own words and replacements, and look back through everything you’ve dictated.
To notice the key while you’re in other apps, and to paste your words where your cursor is. macOS asks once, the first time you turn Dictation on.
The Language menu lists every language Apple’s dictation model supports on your Mac. Choose one, download it once, and dictation in that language works offline.
Same app. Plenty more to do.
Every one of them comes with OneMacApp, for the same one-time price.
